Genovese – Ocimum basilicum ‘Genovese’ is an annual native to India, Africa, and Asia. One of the most popular herbs, it is now cultivated in all temperate climates throughout the world. Of all the basils to grow, and there are about 150 varieties, Genovese basil is one of the best because it yields 7 to 8 cuttings and makes the best pesto.
Large Leaf – Large Leaf basil is a variety with extraordinary big leaves, up to 5 inches (13 cm.) long. The leaves are a brilliant green and crinkled and look much like lettuce leaves – hence the common name. Leaves are set closely on plants that reach about 18-24 inches (46-61 cm.) in height.

Sweet Italian – Sweet Basil is also rather common, and a favorite for pesto. The flavor of these leaves is mild and sweet, and it appeals to most palates when used sparingly.
Thai – If you like the taste of anise, try this. This variety is actually a cultivar of Sweet Basil that has been selected for a slightly spicy anise or licorice taste.
